Pixel Penguin...

Well,

Beign creative has taken a hit for me the past couple of weeks, not sure whats happened to me tbh, seem to find it very hard to stick to a project or even come up with something to begin with...

Anyway...

I had a quick look about pixel joint and notice one of their competitions (its finished now) was themed around penguins.

I came up with this anyways because why not, currently thinking of ways to get myself back into the 3d side of things so yeah,

think the most important thing is try my hardest to get myself out of this dip i seem to have gotten myself in, here was me thinking it was just a uni thing :(

I'am Still alive!

Hello, everyone.

So havnt posted anything in a while and to be honest its because i havnt done much creative things for a while.

Incase anyone was wondering I didnt manage to get a job at 4J studios,

Now, been trying to get my head back into doing stuff and get me out of this slump i have managed to get myself in.

so been working on a pixel art animation thingy for fun really..


It is not finished yet but this is a little WIP for you...

As much as i hate it, valentines day is around the corner so i though should do some sort of themed explosion (i like explosions)

Minecraft me and stufffor a 4j studios interview...

Hello,

Yesterday I was lucky to be contacted by 4J studios to ask me if I would like to come up for an interview..

my answer was a rather resounding, yes!

So, I decided to prepare myself quickly for 3D pixel art by going over what I had done in 4th year...

Game art assets day 12 : rarity design

Hello everyone,

So what have I been doing over the passed couple of days?

Well lets start of with the items, I have been writing out what could be considered as a design document along side it like I said I would so i know roughly how many unique items there are (the stats an abillities of these items are more than likely change over time but for now I have got them to do what i want them to do.


mushroom : changed the glowing effect behind it a wee bit...
freeze: new
tornado : changed to fit the style of the other items



I havnt really decided what i am going to do with tidal wave yet, i have an image in my head of how it should look but cant seem to get it down on paper yet.

Anyways after that I decided to do some alterations to the design of each card so players know how rare they are...


so red are rare, meaning at max in the entire item deck will have 2 duplicates but more likely it will be the only one in the deck.

orange are uncommon, each item can have anything from 3 - 4 duplicates

and green are common and can have 5+ duplicates of the item...

I am toying with the idea that the common cards although are duplicates hold the same stats but can have additional stats such as a rusty handgun same damage but the player has to roll a dice if its a 1 the gun jams or brakes.

Game art assets day 11 : more items!

Hello, just to clear things up straight away, I know i said i would be doing more on the pig today...

However I ended up doing some more items just to get myself back into it since i took a wee break...



However whilst i was doing these I was thinking maybe i should have down on paper somewhere what items there are going to be so thats probably what I will be doing tomorrow.

Game art assets day 10 : meat card and hearthstone

Hello guys,

Well I have a confession to make, I havnt been doing much arty shizz for the past 2 days all thanks to blizzard letting me into the hearthstone beta.

Which is awfully good fun...so get it checked out if you havnt done so already.

anyways what i have done ever is the design for meat decks and fixed somethings with the item decks..


So yeah the layouts changed a wee bit, basically the card now displays how many turns/rounds you can use the weapon , this rpg for example can be used once.

I also have added under the RPG title a subtitle so people know what item it is, from weapons, consumables and constructions.


i also started designing the meat cards..


The reason why the numbers arnt in the corner as I am working from a template which needs a border for catting.

Game art assets day 9 : new layout | design of cards

So as you may have seen in the title i have edited the layout of the card a bit more...

 I spent some time clearing some of the rules up in the design document to make things easier for me to decide what needs to be shown on the card,




but yeah, think tomorrow i should start the work on the pig again had a rather long time out from working on him now.

Pixel Joint - Competition #1

Hello everyone,

Well today I was going to do some more items and such when i came across this challenge on pixel joint...

CHALLENGE: Radiant Orchid

The colour gods at Pantone have ordained that the colour of the year is Radiant Orchid. So, this week, the task is to use that colour within the orchid shaped canvas shown below.

You can pixel anything you want, you can even just pixel an orchid if you want to be really boring.


Canvas Size - Use the template above.
Colours - Max 18. Must use the colour above (#b163a2).
Transparency - Required (only outside the template shape though).
Animation - Optional.



CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

Now during my time at uni i kinda wanted to do one of these but didnt feel i had the time, but now that i do i felt i would give it a bash despite the competition finishing today at 5 and me deciding to do at 3 this is what i came up with...

Game Art assests : Day 6&7 card layout and item images

Hello people,

So yesterday and today i took a break from the haymaker and started planning out the card layout etc...

  • Background - wooden like a crate ( in the ipad version I always imagined the weapons etc would fall down in crates ( like worms ) so I felt that would be fitting for the background of the cards
  • Title Box - the title box at the top of the card is where the name of the item will be e.g. shotgun. the colour i was thinking represents the rarity of the card - green = common, orange - uncommon - red - rare. also thinking of making this box just the picture of the item sitting on a rack or on a chelf as if its a store. this will also display the damage, health of the item
  • Description - this is where the item is explained more in depth,
  • the other 2 number boxes are the items cost and selling price.

anyways i started work on the items that you can buy and heres an image of 13 i have done so far

Game art assets : day 5


So here he is by the end of today, And the main changes were for the grass however i was starting to get bored so started on the lay out for the background.

still thinking the pigs waiting looks a bit awkward but I kinda dont want to make any huges changes to it yet think the barrel needs to be a bit more top heavy (so the barrels pointing to the ground) would prob make it look better too.

tomorrow i might take a break on the pig and start thinking about the card layout maybe get some item cards designs down and put them up.

Game art assets: day 4 | portfolio problems




So day 4 ...

today i spent most of my time thinking of better things for this guy to have.. I came to the conclusion that having a medic class boss dude missing a hand being rather problematic.

so he now has 2 free hands the weapons now a modified leaf blower (going with the theme of being on a farm) this weapon can now be attached to his back pack when hes not using it...

I also think he might be a wee bit off balance? however i dont know how to change that without pretty much starting from scratch :(

also made a start at doing the environment, kinda wishing i did a timelapse of this but wasnt to be.

other news...

so decided to edit a few things on my portfolio only to find out i have been completely locked out, it would also appear that my 2 emails that i have ever had in my life (excluding uni) hasnt been registered? So i dont know what i am going to do on that end.

also updated my wallpaper to give me some motivation...

game art assets : Day 3

So here is what i got up to for day three...


As you can see hes changed quite a bit from yesterdays.. (here it is again in case you have forgotten)


so heres the changes...

  1. Head - hes balder now, i did this as i fel there was too much brown in the scene and felt he looked a bit "anime" i also added a little headband in to show you what kind of class he is (healer) ... this is the sort of band military forces wear around their arms.
  2. his right arm - I moved the weapon in a bit as the angle didnt look right i also added a glove
  3. his left arm - made the gun look a bit more interesting by added a few more details and added some rust
  4. Shading - I added a darker shade to give him a bit more depth as some of his folds and limbs were blending into himself.

Game Art Assets - Day 2

So day 2 of my creative a day was converting the sketch i posted up yesterday into pixel art...



hes getting there but still needs some more work done of course, taking me a bit longer as I have become rather rusty since my last pixel art attempt but I am enjoying it so thats a plus :D

hopefully get him all nicely shaded and adding in a bit more detail tomorrow to make him more interesting so stay tuned.

Pixel scape update



Hey,

So this is my piece of pixel art finished now...might update it later on but we shall see.

But time to move on to other things, I have started pose sketching again try get better at sketching people will hopefully help me improve my other works. ( especially that animation i have planned )

So, whats next...

Firstly,

I gotta get some more applications sent away, so that i can keep the job centre happy.. annoyingly writing applications over and over again seems to be a good way to make me want to not do anything for a while but hopefully i can still keep hold of my motivation after that...

and finally get the last bit of that wolf animation finished with (keep forgetting about that)

I also want to do some explosions and particle effects stuff so yeah... should be busy.

so keep an eye out for all that,

Super meat boy fan art, pixel tree update, a new HDD and portfolio feedback

Hey guys, quickly just going to show you lot a couple of things to chat about,


So first up, I got a new hdd through amazon a couple of days back so expect to see the next timelapses of the wolf run cycle soon.

secondly, being a massive fan of team meats, super meat boy game I created a piece of fan art to show my love,

Pixel tree update

next up heres a little image to see the progress on my pixel tree idea, i have been playing alot of terraria recently since the new 1.2 update so its starting to influence me a wee bit.

Lastly, you may remember me talking about 4j studios contacting me asking to see more stuff, well i didnt get the job but the lead artist David Keningale did however give me some ver good feedback on my portfolio and good words so all in all put a smile on my face despite not getting a job and has given me some much need motivation to get going and improving :) so stay tuned!

Quick update

Hello,

So today I was just about to do my 10 30second sketches a day routine when I have realized my sketchbook has been filled.

So, my mission is to buy a new sketchbook of course, but I have decided for this new one i shall keep it more organised might buy multiple ones so i can have 1 for poses/30 second sketches (which I have decided I will post no matter how bad i think they are) and also one for tshirt designs or anything else that finds its way onto paper.

But yeah so other than that I have started a new pixel art landscape piece, I havnt gone back to my wolf just yet as my hard drive is full so I cant do anymore timelapses until my brand new hard drive gets delivered.

However part 2 should be up on my youtube channel by tonight.

My first quadruped animation (pixel art) | PART 1

Hey guys,

Well today along with my sketches i decided to get back into animating to prepare myself for the short I am doing,

So, I chose to do a quadruped animation because its something I have never done before I have done a lot of human animations but nothing else really.

The above image I would say is about 25% complete maybe less, so how did I get to this stage then,

  1. the sketch so bellow is my initial sketch on paper which i then highlighted in pen to make it easier for the camera to pick out, you may ask why I didnt just sketch it straight onto he computer using a graphics tablet. well the truth is, I really don't like it I feel on the sketching stage I produce stuff much closer to what I had in my head and paper and pencil is just easier and more tactile for me.


2. After doing this I then made a rough pixel outline

3. cleaned the pixel line adding base colour and shading

4. started animating using run cycles of dogs as reference most notably this animation by Paul Robertson.



5. As I am right now on just the base poses of the wolf I am ignoring smaller details such as the hair and tail which i completely removed so i could focus completely on the legs.


so I am about 2 thirds of the way through my first pass, so this is 6 frames of a total of 9.


So hopefully I will have Part 1 on youtube tomorrow and will be working on the 2nd part :)

Pixelation for the nation

Hello,

Thought it was about time for a little update. So I am still doing sketches fairly regularly along with doing some more t shirt designs for qwertee just for general practice if you like any of them you can vote for them here, anyways shameless plugging aside I also thought of doing some pixel art.

I decided to do something out of my comfort zone so i did an environment landscape...

Apart from some mistakes here and there im rather happy with the outcome, it felt good doing pixel art without the pressure of uni looming over me. It was originally going to be a background for my pixel boy guy.




but i felt that he didnt really fit the environment and would be better in a more simplistic scenario, also i was doing this as my mum wanted an ipad case from my redbubble store so told her that i would make it a bit fancier first, however since the ipad has a set resolution and template i would need to keep it in mind so when it scales it does so properly.

moving on from that,

My bloopers or W.I.T.H (what if this happened) animation is still going rather slowly i am sorry to say, as I rushed through storyboards, missed out animatics in a desperate attempt to get straight to animation only to find myself in over my head.. so taking a step back and taking a more careful approach.

hopefully going to get the storyboards done for tonight and al post them on here tomorrow.

Terraria: NPC Competition

Hello,

So, was just looking through my facebook and noticed that re-digit posted a competition to design an NPC for the new update that they are doing.

Here is the post:



Hey guys! With the update nearing release I thought it would be cool to do another community based contest. This time, we are offering you the rare opportunity to have an NPC designed by you brought to life in the game!

Not good with art? No problem there! Simply give a thorough description of your NPC, and we will have one of our Re-Logic team members bring your vision to life!

Ready to get started? Great…here’s how it will work:
Required for each entry – please use this format to make the review of what we hope will be tons of creative ideas easier for us.

This contest will run until Sunday the 25th.


Here are the guidelines:
  1. APPEARANCE: What does he/she look like? Again, if you are not artistically gifted you may describe the design. If you are able to provide an example of your NPC in sprite form feel free but for legal purposes the final design will be done by a member of Re-Logic with communication from you on the design.
  2. PURPOSE: What is the purpose of your NPC? What does he/she sell or do?
  3. ACQUISITION: How do you get him/her?
  4. DIALOGUE: What is his/her personality and signature phrases? Be clever!
  5. NAMES: What are some names you would like him/her to have?
  6. COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT: Be original! Let's not get me sued over this. ;)

Before anyone says it, this will not delay the release of the update in anyway as NPCs are not difficult to add in game. :)

The organ donor

Appearance: Old and malnourished and covered in blood.

Purpose: This dodgey dealer likes giving you cash for donated organs.

(everything you donate takes X amount of health from your health bar)

*HEART: donate a heart from your health bar = X amount of coin
*STAR: donate a star form your mana bar = X amount of coin
*EYES: donate your eyes = X amount of coin + impaired vision everything is blurred and or completely black sight is restored after time or if you have lenses in your inventory
*LEG MUSCLE: donate your leg muscles = X amount of coin + movement speed reduced
*ARM MUSCLE: donate your arm muscles = X amount of coin + melee speed reduced

All i can think of in terms of donations just a bit of fun character prob more end game and makes players have to go out in search for heart and mana crystals to replenish their health bar again. The organ dealer does not sell if you donate more than X amount of your health/mana bar this is to stop players from just constantly selling organs to make loads of money.



OR the player can spend money and get Health, mana top-ups, and some temporary buffs. Whatever would be easier to implement

Acquisition: When you have "X" number of health, and have died "X" number of times.

Dialogue:

"Psssssssst, mate."

"I like your eyes, can i have them?"

" 89% mortality, better than that nurse though"

ok, dialogue is pretty naff may need to think more on that

Name: Jeff, Lector, Heiter, Szell, Zoid-Berg, (any other names of questionable doctors)
